摘要: In discussions concerning the possible construction of a Panama sea-level canal it has been assumed that Gatun Lake, part present canal, acts as fresh-water barrier to migration marine animals from either end Canal other. Methodical documentary salinity determinations have not made previously, and only few surface observations recorded. Determinations salinity-temperature profiles in spring fall, 1972, show essentially freshwater be Miraflores through Pedro Miguel Locks, to, including, upper chambers Locks. With exception those lower chamber indicate homogeneity thorough vertical mixing all water masses lock systems lakes canal. Homogeneity is thought due turbulence during filling chambers, “piston-effect” large ships moving into action ships' propellers, density currents established gates are opened. Water approach channel at Pacific appears more homogeneous than Atlantic end. The does, fact, constitute stenohaline biota Oceans.
