摘要: BACKGROUND: Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is an aggressive cancer of serosal membranes, mostly pleura. It related to asbestos exposure and its incidence in most industrialized countries projected remain stable or increase until 2020. Prognosis remains poor. Clinical prognostic scoring systems lack precision. No tissue markers are available. Aquaporin 1 (AQP1) a cell membrane channel involved water transport, motility, proliferation. A blocker agonist available. METHODS: Two independent cohorts MM were studied. Cohort consisted 80 consecutive patients who underwent radical surgery (extrapleural pneumonectomy [EPP]). 2 included 56 conservatively managed from another institution. information was obtained files. Diagnoses histologically verified. Immunohistochemical labeling for AQP1 performed on tumor the percentage positive cells scored. RESULTS: We demonstrated expression normal neoplastic mesothelium at apical aspect cell, keeping with role transport. For both cohorts, by ≥50% associated significantly enhanced survival (9.4 months vs 30.4 EPP 5 15 treated patients). This established factors, including histologic subtype, pathologic stage, sex, age time diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Expression correlated prognosis MM, irrespective treatment factors. should be routine histopathologic workup. An may become useful treatment.
