摘要: Publisher Summary This chapter explains the basic concepts related to metabolism of iron and disorders associated with it. Iron is an essential nutrient required in a wide variety metabolic processes. In solution, exists two oxidation states. absorbed from diet small intestine transferred plasma, where it bound transferrin for transport cells within body. Once inside body, cycles nearly closed system because little lost domestic animals unless hemorrhage occurs. About 75% present plasma transported bone marrow incorporation into hemoglobin developing erythroid cells. The remaining taken up by nonerythroid tissues, primarily liver. Erythrocytes containing normally circulate several months before being phagocytized macrophages when senescent. After phagocytosis, erythrocytes are lysed, degraded, released. This detail distribution, absorption, transport. also discusses regulation metabolism, cells, tests evaluating metabolism.
