General movements of South African (Cape) fur seals Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus from analysis of recoveries of tagged animals

摘要: Recoveries of tagged South African (Cape) fur seals totalling 10 954 are analysed. Of these, 92 per cent were harvested at their natal colony, 6 colonies other than colony and 1 each recovered sea found beached. Some dispersal does take place, the Namibian Cape Cross being focal point. Seals from different share same feeding grounds, areas north between Point Columbine appearing to be two most important grounds. The initial rate natural mortality females is higher that males, but age six weeks rates same. Most harvested, collected in second year, suggesting only start disperse after weaning it mainly immature which disperse. five years or older, whereas those beached first year.
