Selecting instruments for assessing psychological wellbeing in Afghan and Kurdish refugee groups

摘要: Background: Afghan and Iraqi refugees comprise nearly half of all those currently under United Nations protection. As many them will eventually be resettled in countries outside the region origin, their long term health settlement concerns are relevance to host societies, a likely focus for future research. Since Australia New Zealand have both accepted years dedicated, but different immigration policies, study comparing resettlement two refugee groups these was undertaken. The purpose this article is describe instrument selection assessing mental psychological well being with Kurdish former refugees, particular address linguistic considerations translated availability. A summary instruments previously used migrant from Middle East presented assist other researchers, before describing three ultimately selected quantitative component our study. Findings: Kessler-10 Psychological Distress Scale (K10), General Perceived Self-Efficacy (GPSE), Personal Well-Being Index (PWI) showed good reliability (Cronbach’s alphas 0.86, 0.89 0.83 respectively combined language versions) ease use even pre-literate participants, sample 193 although some concepts GPSE proved problematic small number respondents. Farsi choice majority while most Kurds chose complete English versions addition Farsi. No one Arabic or Turkish translations. Participants settled less than ten were more questionnaires Descriptive statistics each results split by gender, group version completed. Conclusion: This paper discusses speaking participants Afghanistan, concluding that Kessler-10, scale PWI suitable groups. Suitable translations freely available.
