Beyond technological catch-up: An empirical investigation of further innovative capability accumulation outcomes in latecomer firms with evidence from Brazil

摘要: This article examines outcomes that are achieved by latecomer firms accumulating innovative capabilities. By drawing on fieldwork evidence from pulp and paper in Brazil 1950 to 2010, it was found (1) accumulated capabilities allowed them become world leaders the eucalyptus forestry segment of global industry; (2) addition technological catch-up, accumulation these resulted generated benefits within such as (i) implementing inventive activities, (ii) consistently improving several parameters operational environment-related performance, (iii) creating various patterns corporate growth; (3) were not just research-based patent-related but mainly a mix capability levels have varying degrees novelty complexity for diverse functions. Therefore, wide range types does pay off firms, their industries (ultimately) economies. combining novel approach examining firm with findings inductive fieldwork, this generates new empirical methodological insights long-standing debate about fundamental source firm's competitive performance. should draw attention managers importance having multiplicity achieve desired outcomes; addition, encourage policy makers developing economies adopt comprehensive view activities place firm-centered innovation at center industrial policies.
