Prescribing Patterns and Safety of Mezclitas for Respiratory Illnesses

摘要: Objective: To evaluate the prescribing patterns of compound mixtures cough and cold liquid medications, known as mezclitas, which are prescribed to patients with respiratory illnesses in Puerto Rico. Secondary objectives include assessing potential safety these patients’ perception them. Methods: Using a cross sectional study approach, convenience sample was obtained from five pharmacies Rico, October 2008 2009. Patients were asked complete 9-item questionnaire about demographic information, addition their mezclita prescription data. Results: The mean age 43 years range less than 12 months 101 years. For children < four age, 71% medications. Sixty-four percent prescriptions given females. most prevalent ingredient employed guaifenesin, appeared 77% mezclitas. ‘Common cold’ principal diagnosis for 62% prescriptions, 75% contained corticosteroid 17% beta2 agonist bronchodilator. top medical specialty general medicine (51%). Thirty-eight hypertensive decongestant. majority diabetic (60%) dispensed corticosteroid. Most (74%) reported that they had rapid good response mezclita. Conclusion: Mezclitas commonly acute symptoms upper illness by physicians despite possible side effects. This suggests mezclitas do not always consider evidence-based treatment guidelines.
