Preliminary Overview of Late Cretaceous Turtle Diversity in Eastern Central Europe (Austria, Hungary, and Romania)

摘要: A preliminary overview of the relatively poorly known Late Cretaceous turtle faunas from eastern Central Europe is given, including brief descriptions both historically significant and more recently collected taxa specimens Santonian-Campanian Hungary, Campanian Austria, Maastrichtian Romania. Eastern European are similar to contemporaneous Western in their low taxonomic diversity being composed almost exclusively continental forms that considered endemic Europe. The fauna includes two pleurodire lineages: primitive Dortokidae, represented by a separate regional lineage Dortokidae gen. et sp. nov. Transylvania (Romania) other indeterminate dortokids Santonian Hungary Austria; Bothremydidae, Foxemys sp., member Foxemydina otherwise only Cryptodires conservative turtle, Kallokibotion bajazidi (Nopcsa, Quarterly Journal Geological Society London 79:100–116, 1923a), previously unknown or unrecognised, closely related Austria. absence Europe, coupled with presence regions bothremydid dortokid lineages, indicate were partially separated one another during Cretaceous. “Senonemys suemegensis” (Bohn, Foldtani Kozlony 96:111–118, 1966) Upper marine rocks but because material was not adequately described it now appears be lost, identity relationships this taxon remain unknown. Many turtle-bearing localities show differences relative abundances faunal compositions likely due combination ecological biogeographical factors extinctions.
