摘要: OBJECTIVES We report the plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels of 16 young children who were undergoing ambulatory surgery for placement tympanostomy tubes. METHODS previously obtained blood samples from and reported that they had lower than adults eicosapentaenoic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid), vitamin A, selenium. Plasma frozen continuously at -80 degrees C was available subjects RESULTS The mean (+/- SD) age patients 3.7 +/- 1.6 years (median, 2.9 years; range, 1.9 to 7.4 years). Sixty-two percent male; half white, Hispanic. private patients; parents taking supplements. None a history rickets. 25(OH)D less 10 ng/mL; 50% 20 ng/mL (deficient in adults); another 31% 21 29 (insufficient adults). CONCLUSIONS Vitamin is essential production endogenous antimicrobial peptides, has been linked seasonal, epidemic influenza A. However, level needed prevent infection with various human pathogens not defined. In view increasing bacterial resistance emerging new pathogens, further research on relationship other nutritional factors warranted.
