Staphylococcus aureus as an intracellular pathogen: the role of small colony variants

摘要: Increasing evidence indicates that Staphylococcus aureus might be a facultative intracellular pathogen. In particular, certain subpopulations, called small colony variants (SCVs), seem to well adapted the milieu. When compared 'normal' staphylococcal strains, SCVs show increased uptake by host cells, resistance defenses and reduced stimulation of defenses. We propose ability form two subpopulations with different phenotypes allow S. option for both extra- cellular intra-cellular survival in host.
