摘要: Abstract Background. Although transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1 ) from mother to infant has been well documented during pregnancy and delivery, little is known about the possible HIV-1 postnatal period. Methods. We conducted a prospective cohort study in Kigali, Rwanda, 212 mother—infant pairs who were seronegative for at delivery. All infants breast-fed. The subjects followed three-month intervals, with Western blot assays antibodies testing mononuclear cells by double polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using three sets primers. To evaluate potential risk factors, each seroconverted was matched control women. Results. After mean follow-up 16.6 months, 16 mothers became seropositive HIV-1. Of their infants, 9 seropositive.
