Attitudes of newly qualified doctors towards a career in general practice: a qualitative focus group study.

摘要: Background A key element of the NHS is universal access to a GP. Recently, UK general practice has been described as being in crisis, with training places unfilled and multiple practices reporting vacancies or facing closure. The recruitment GPs continues be focus for both Royal College General Practitioners (RCGP) government. Aim To understand attitudes newly qualified doctors towards career practice, appreciate potential reasons crisis GP recruitment, recommend ways improve recruitment. Design setting qualitative study comprising five groups 74 Foundation Year 1 (FY1) from one Yorkshire deanery. Method Audio recordings were transcribed verbatim thematic analysis undertaken. Results doctors’ thoughts summarised four themes: quality life, job satisfaction, uncertainty surrounding future lack respect among public. Participants felt that could provide good work–life balance, fair pay, stability. Job ability care cradle grave, work within community, was viewed positively. Uncertainties around training, skill levels, workload, together perceived stigma experienced medical schools hospitals, deterrent practice. Conclusion This gathered opinions at critical point their careers, before they choose specialty. Findings highlight areas concern deterrents recommendations address these issues.
