Two-thirds infections develop within acute post-operative period, whereas some may years or even decades surgery. rates are higher reconstruction subsequent than augmentation. Risk factors for infection associated with have not been carefully assessed prospective studies long-term follow-up. Surgical technique patient's underlying condition important determinants. In particular, mastectomy radiotherapy cancer a risk infection. The origin women implants remains difficult to determine, but potential sources include contaminated implant, saline, surgery itself surgical environment, skin mammary ducts, or, as suggested by many reports, seeding implant from remote sites. Late usually results secondary bacteraemia an invasive procedure at location other breasts. Diagnostic management strategies proposed value peri-operative prophylaxis revisited. current hypothesis possible role low-grade subclinical capsular contracture also reviewed.
