摘要: Background Shift work is a necessary part of many industries; however, it can have detrimental effects on health over time. Purpose This study investigated the effect massage intervention cardiac autonomic activity and blood inflammatory markers healthy medical residents working night shifts. Setting trial was conducted at British Columbia Children's Women's Hospital between February 2014 June 2016. Participants Included participants were generally rotating shifts regular basis. Research design randomized, controlled, crossover, open-label (NCT02247089). Interventions received either 30-min or reading control after consecutive periods shift. Main outcome measures The primary high frequency, proxy for parasympathetic activity, measured via heart rate variability. Secondary outcomes included other variability measures, inflammation, pressure. Results Twelve recruited (nine female) with median age 28 years. There no significant difference outcome, (median relative change pre- postmassage [interquartile range]: 62% [-1 to 150], postreading: 14% [-10 51], p = .16). Similarly, there respect Median frequency significantly increased (185 vs. 358 ms2, .04). Conclusion pilot found statistically control; we did observe increase in from before massage, indicative activity. may help inform planning larger trials evaluating interventions nervous system managing shift stress.
