摘要: Abstract Since May, 1967 a copperleadzinc mine has been source of heavy metal input into previously uncontaminated long, narrow, oligotrophic lake, Buttle Lake, situated on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. After peaking in 1980/81, concentations the lake have steadily decreased as result improved treatment systems. Nevertheless, single species diatom, Rhizosolenia eriensis , now dominates phytoplankton community to virtual absence other species. Changes nutrient patterns may give R. competitive advantage over is present quantities up 11, 000 cells/ml and cell accumulates zinc 56, times copper 34, water concenrations. The dominance contributed continuing decline zooplankton numbers through unpalatability.
