摘要: PURPOSE To evaluate the effects of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection on proton metabolites in brain regions carrying heaviest HIV load. METHODS We used two-dimensional MR spectroscopy with a preselected volume at level third ventricle to measure N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) and containing choline (Cho), creatine (Cr) basal ganglia eight cognitively impaired subjects who were seropositive for control seronegative HIV. Results are expressed as metabolite ratios. RESULTS In thalamus lenticular nuclei, NAA/Cr was not different between two groups. NAA/Cho decreased both nuclei HIV-positive group compared HIV-negative group. Cho/Cr tended be increased CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest no NAA differences groups, consistent negligible neuron loss region that carries trends toward histopathologic infiltration subcortical gray matter structures foamy macrophages, microglia, lymphocytes, or possibly gliosis.
