摘要: Materials production requires a large amount of energy use and is significant source greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, producing approximately 25% all anthropogenic CO2 emissions. It produces volumes waste both in at end-of-life disposal. More efficient materials could play key role achieving multiple environmental economic benefits. Material efficiency entails the pursuit technical strategies, business models, consumer preferences, policy instruments that would lead to substantial reduction new required deliver well-being. Although many opportunities exist, material not realized practice its full potential. We evaluate potential for improvement, highlight drivers realize efficiency, anticipate ways forward dematerializing our lives economy limit impacts climate change remain on sustainable development path.
