摘要: Background Following otitis media, 10% to 50% of children develop residual middle ear effusion with concurrent hearing loss and potential cognitive, behavioral, language impairment. Prophylactic antibiotics tympanostomy tubes are currently recommended treatments for chronic effusion. Objective In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study effusion, we assessed the effectiveness topical intranasal beclomethasone as an adjunct prophylactic antibiotic therapy. Methods Sixty-one children, aged 3 11 years persistent greater than months, were into three treatment groups: (1) antibiotics, (2) plus (336 micrograms/day); (3) placebo. Patients evaluated aerollergen skin tests at entry; tympanogram, otoscopic examination, symptom questionnaire 0, 4, 8, 12 weeks. Results While pressures, examinations, scores improved each group over weeks therapy, all measures more rapidly antibiotics-alone placebo nasal spray first 8 Only significantly left (P = .004) right .01) pressures Resolution effusions was frequent in Conclusions We conclude that may be useful
