摘要: Abstract Five-membered cyclic organic carbonates (COC) are of interest for their ability to modify the surface properties smectites and enhance hydraulic resistance bentonites saline leachates. The mechanism interaction glycerol carbonate (GC) several other hydroxyl containing (generally having progressively greater molecular masses) with sodium montmorillonite (Na + -Mt) was studied using powder X-ray diffraction infrared spectroscopy. 001 reflection GC/Na -Mt intercalates varied amount COC added, measured d value increased from 1.29 nm as large 2.22 nm at equal-mass coverage Na -Mt. In general, when intercalated, carbonyl (C O) stretch fundamental (O–H) bands derivatives were red-shifted respect these neat COC, indicating strong ion-dipole group interlayer , H-bonding OH both water Mt surfaces. A stable highly ordered intercalate produced a 1:1 mass loading in which about 6 GC molecules per unit cell (~ 7 ion) replaced most water.
