WORKING TOWARDS ALGEBRA: THE IMPORTANCE OF RELATIONAL THINKING

摘要: Algebra has become a building block for success in mathematics. Our argument this paper is that, order to allow students properly develop their understanding of algebra, solid foundations need be laid during elementary and junior secondary school years through experiences with number operations the key ideas equivalence compensation. These are broadly described by term relational thinking. In exploratory study mathematical thinking selection Year 7 8 Brazil, we found that when were asked solve numerical expressions using four arithmetic operations, most opted computational methods.
