摘要: Abstract In this study, a 1 m long crack found in the stabilator skin of jet aircraft has been investigated. SEM observation revealed that initiated from free edge inboard side where fatigue striations and ratchet marks were observed, then propagated transversely through manner brittle crack. Predominantly intergranular fracture with quasi-cleavage morphologies was observed on entire fractured surface. Fractography hydrogen measurement as well hardness testing indicated induced cracking (HIC) dominant mechanism. Visual identified undesirable loads by several improper maintenance activities. Finite element analysis used to correlate experimental observations these abnormal load cases. The location stress concentration determined finite showed good correlation actual location. It concluded an undesired assembly force high residual stress, operational aerodynamic combined contributed exceeding HIC threshold degraded metal due embrittlement.
