摘要: Surface sediments in hydrothcrmally active zones of the Guaymas Basin, Gulf California, have been analyzed for inorganic chemical composition and their interstitial waters, as well organic che mistry. Analysis constituents vent fluids establishes end-member concentrations hydrothermal also indicates that little change com position has occurred between 1981 1988. Special atten tion is given to short surface cores collected with DSV ALVIN areas characterized by upward advection origin, both strong advective flow seepage through large bacterial mats Beggiatoa. Interstitial-water compositions suggest consisting scawater components rise surface, often carrying a supply sulfide shal low origin; this turn may serve an energy source growth sulfide-oxidizing bacteria. Studies hydrothermally generated petroleum show it condensate (C|-C2o hydrocarbons polynuclcar aromatic hydrocarbons), much material migrated upward-advccling from depths below sediment-water interface. The found mainly fractures silicacemented clasts biodegraded. In vent/mound, unaltered condensate, indicating migration exceeds biodegradation.
