Surface modifications of activated carbon by gamma irradiation

摘要: Abstract Four commercial activated carbons with different chemical and textural characteristics were modified by gamma irradiation under five conditions: irradiated in absence of water, presence ultrapure water at pH = 1.0 1000 mg L −1 Cl − , pH = 7.5 Br pH = 12.5 NO 3 . Changes surface chemistry studied X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; pH point zero charge, total acidic groups basic groups, which determined assessment HCl NaOH; changes obtaining the corresponding adsorption isotherms N 2 CO Outcomes show that carbon can be depend on conditions. Modifications sp hybridization suggest undergo graphitization. Measurements structural parameters indicate treatment does not modify properties carbons. Finally, studies pristine using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy Kubelka–Munk function revealed a reduction band gap energy associated an increase atoms.
