Xerostomia Due to Systemic Disease: A Review of 20 Conditions and Mechanisms

摘要: Xerostomia is a common complaint of nearly half the elderly population and about one-fifth younger adults. It causes several signs symptoms, compromise oral functions health-related quality-of-life. Multiple reasons are proposed to describe etiology xerostomia such as local factors, psychogenic systemic diseases. In order manage effectively, identification main causality mandatory. The aim this review was present diseases leading with their mechanisms action. We used various general search engines specialized databases Google, Google Scholar, Yahoo, PubMed, PubMed Central, MedLine Plus, Medknow, EBSCO, ScienceDirect, Scopus, WebMD, EMBASE, authorized textbooks find relevant topics by means Medical Subject Headings keywords "xerostomia," "hyposalivations," "mouth dryness," "disease," "systemic." appraised 97 English-language articles published over last 40 years in both medical dental journals including reviews, meta-analysis, original papers, case reports. Upon compilation data, it concluded that autoimmune most frequently involve salivary glands cause followed diabetes mellitus, renal failure, graft-versus-host disease. Moreover, underlying disease-related are: autoimmunity, infiltration immunocompetent cells, granuloma formation, fibrosis dehydration, deposition proteinaceous substances, bacterial infection, side-effects medications.
