摘要: We have measured both alkalinity and total carbon dioxide on a selected set of Black Sea samples from cruise 134 R.V. Knorr, using gas extraction/coulometry techniques, improved titration procedures that permit more accurate data than those obtained in earlier expeditions. Earlier results had shown an apparent excess alkalinity, by factor 1.6, the stoichiometric ratio predicted sequential oxidation Redfield organic matter species O2, NO3− SO42−. Thus nature substrate our fundamental knowledge reaction stoichiometry anoxic systems were called into question. show CO2 balance is consistent, within narrower limits found earlier, with sulfate: 2CH2O+SO42− → 2HCO3−+H2S consistent work sediment interstitial waters conditions (Berneret al., 1970, Limnology Oceanography, 15. 544–549: Ben Yaakov, 1973, 18, 86–94). The are lower 300μmol kg−1 surface waters, 50μmol deep reported 1969 Atlantis II expedition. While changes hydrography been documented, these system far too large to be accounted for processes likely result technique, rather geochemical evolution.
