Age, source, and distribution of Holocene tephra in the southern Kurile Islands: Evaluation of Holocene eruptive activities in the southern Kurile arc

摘要: Abstract We identified 32 distinct layers of Holocene tephra in the southern Kurile Islands on basis petrological features and 14C ages soils beneath or above layers. Three were derived from volcanoes Kunashir Island: one Mendeleev volcano (ca. 2.6 cal ka) two Tyatya (1420 cal. BP AD 1973). Fourteen widely distributed silicic four Hokkaido: Mashu, Rausudake, Tarumai, Hokkaido-Komagatake. A widespread was Baitoushan volcano, between China North Korea. have unknown source volcanoes: 1 medium-K ash, 2 low-K 11 scoria/pumice ash Except for these are presumed to be Islands. It has been known that caldera-forming eruptions occurred at Mashu (Hokkaido) Lvinaya Past (Iturup) early 12–8 ka). However, we did not find any volcano. Our results provide evidence temporal spatial evolution eruptive activity arc. conclude level (especially Island) lower than eastern Hokkaido since 8 ka. The islands produced mainly vulcanian strombolian mafic magma, whereas plinian magma repeated intervals 1000–2000 years.
