Voluntary initiatives in the mining industry: Do they work?

摘要: The number, range and foci of voluntary initiatives have been growing rapidly over the last decade, but there is still debate as to whether they work 'on ground'. paper begins by defining considers their relative strengths weaknesses. main factors contributing effectiveness-monitoring, transparency, enforcement, content compulsoriness-are discussed are then reviewed in light an Australian case study a mining industry initiative. Interviews with executives other stakeholders used offer insights into ways which efficacy might be improved. It here that paradox emerges: most potential for success appear those are, effectively, compulsory. concludes discussing key 'compulsory' differ from command-and-control regulation broader implications this apparent movement towards privatisation regulation.
