Self-reported drug abuse in male adolescents with behavioral disturbances, and follow-up for future schizophrenia

摘要: Abstract Background The prevalence of illicit drug abuse in persons with schizophrenia is greater then the general population and has been attributed to self-medication symptoms illness; however, limited data indicate that already prevalent before manifestation psychosis, consistent possibility might be associated increased risk for schizophrenia. Methods Israeli Draft Board screens entire, unselected 16- 17-year-old male adolescents behavioral or personality disturbances. In a cohort 270,000 screened, 50,413 were suspected having disturbances questioned about use abuse. These followed hospitalization using national, population-based psychiatric registry; 268 (.5%) hospitalized over following 5–11 years. Results self-reported later was 12.4%, compared 5.9% not hospitalized; adjusted RR = 2.016, 95% confidence interval: 1.309–3.104.
