摘要: Abstract Eurasian Otter ( Lutra lutra ) surveys are commonly based on spraints (otter faeces) as an index of use intensity, habitat preference, and to a certain degree, population density. We were interested know: (1) Does the number fresh correlate visits? (2) Can be indicative activity levels? (3) Is absence no used videotaping that provided true picture otter nocturnal at marking sites compared our findings with following morning. This enabled us visits during night assess validity index. carried out total 59 nights counted in 29 sprainting between September 2002 March 2004. found positive correlation proportion latrine was visited deposited. The spraints/night/site positively correlated visits/night/site. Latrines more had higher per visited. However, about half where found, recorded. Spraints generally good indicator intensity specific consequently possible level preference. Understanding what determines scent-marking behaviour its relationship actual presence can improve ability populations design management protocols.
