摘要: Abstract Spraint surveys have been widely used over the last decade to assess distribution of otters Lutra lutra , and sometimes indicate population status, in broad terms, as well identify habitat features considered importance otters. A study Shetland has recently cast doubt on this methodology. The methodology is evaluated here shows that spraint give a reliable picture otter distribution. It also shown that, with care, density signs can be make comparison populations, while relationship between measures cover functional one, value conservation programmes. Reasons for anomalous conclusions are suggested.
