摘要: Background: The tobacco epidemic is a heralding health menace, particularly among college students. Tobacco usage young can have an especially devastating effect as they be exposed for longer periods. Data to estimate the prevalence of use in adults will valuable addition to existing resources. Materials and Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was therefore carried out Mangalore city using a pre-tested, self-administered questionnaire adapted from Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) with a representative sample 720 students aged 18-20 years selected degree colleges by multi-stage random sampling. Results: Prevalence ‘ever users’ ‘current smoking were 20.4% 11.4%, respectively. The mean age at initiation cigarette 16 majority (31 %) smoked public places. Interestingly, 84% them knew about harmful effects smoking. About one half smokers had some or most their friends Multivariate analysis revealed gender (OR=8.585: CI-3.26-22.5), pocket money (OR=4.165; CI=1.76-9.82) peer’s habit (OR= 5.15; CI-2.21-11.9) higher odds as correlates usage Conclusions: It prime importance highlight role of prevention rather than subsequently trying stop habit. Comprehensive interventions embracing family, social milieu are needed reduce India.
