摘要: The recent discovery of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC), an epigenetic modifier and oxidation product 5-methylcytosine (5mC), has broadened the scope understanding neural development neurodegenerative diseases. By virtue their functional groups, 5mC 5hmC exert opposite effects on gene expression; former is generally associated with silencing whereas latter mainly involved in up-regulation expression affecting cellular processes such as differentiation, development, aging. Although DNA methylation plays important role normal neuroprotection, altered pathway due to complex interaction environmental genetic factors may cause severe neurodegeneration. levels brain increase progressively from birth until death, while patients disorders, are found be highly compromised. This article discusses developments area hydroxymethylation, particular emphasis diseases including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's Huntington's disease. We have also included findings tumors (gliomas). Despite compelling evidence involvement neurodegeneration, it yet established whether this molecule or effect onset progression
