摘要: Background The incidence of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is higher in men than women, likely due to increased occupational asbestos exposure among men. Women also appear experience better long-term survival. This study evaluates the role gender relation established prognostic factors MPM. Methods We reviewed 715 cases MPM treated with extrapleural pneumonectomy at our institution between July 1987 and December 2008. Data for patients epithelial nonepithelial tumors were analyzed separately. Kaplan-Meier Cox regression analyses used estimate survival various cohorts assess relationship independent age surgery, stage, side, preoperative laboratory studies. Results Of 702 complete data available, 114 out 450 31 252 histology women. (and not nonepithelial) disease found differ significantly from respect younger age, rate thrombocytosis, longer after surgery. effect on persisted when controlling leukocytosis, anemia a multivariable analysis. No significant differences seen regard gender, or anemia. Conclusions In absence other negative factors, women demonstrated advantage. These findings support an aggressive approach treating including individuals favorable predictors, particularly no risk factors.
