摘要: Abstract The isolation of auxotrophic strains a parasite offers new opportunities for studying parasitology. We have isolated cloned lines Plasmodium falciparum that, unlike the parent line from which they were derived, rely on exogenous p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) growth. Isolation involved random mutagenesis P. and subsequent selection PABA-dependent parasites. Both clones analyzed PABA uptake synthesis. Each clone takes up comparable amounts medium. The line, 3D7, can synthesize de novo, whereas cannot. requirement growth by coupled with their inability to indicates that normal be completely supported either synthesis or salvage. This work further clarifies relationship between availability success parasite, an issue debate classic studies showing reduced load in individuals milk-fed diets.
