摘要: Myelin degeneration is commonly found in the central nervous system (CNS) of individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), especially patients HIV-1-associated dementia. We analysed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum samples from 25 HIV-1 for presence antibodies directed against sulfatide, major acidic glycosphingolipid myelin. Nine had CNS complications, including 3 dementia, 16 no neurological symptoms. Elevated titres anti-sulfatide were 24/25 HIV-1-infected but none them CSF. Although vast majority harbour autoantibodies sulfatide serum, lack detectable intrathecal production indicates that are not a component pathogenesis myelin damage infection.
