摘要: The air-liquid interface is a selectively advantageous niche for aerobes due to the accessibility oxygen. Various species of form biofilm-like structure at interfaces, known as pellicle. Although pellicle one major growth modes microorganisms, metabolic features cells and determinative factors formation are largely unknown. In this study, we investigated affecting by facultative aerobe Pseudomonas aeruginosa, also examined gene expression profiles in order characterize lifestyle. A mutant strain deficient production exopolysaccharides displayed poor pellicle-forming ability disadvantage under static conditions compared with wild-type strain. Notably, supplementation culture medium an alternative electron acceptor, nitrate, led diminished formation. Nitrate facilitated anaerobic planktonic cell subpopulation that acted competitor iron aerobic subpopulation, resulting observed reduction. Transcriptome analysis revealed were iron-depleted states. Thus, although certainly confers advantage conditions, face nutritional trade-off between oxygen acquisition.
