摘要: BACKGROUND COPD is characterized by chronic airway inflammation and remodeling, with serious modifications of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Hyaluronic acid (HA) an abundant ECM molecule in lung various biologic functions that depend on its molecular weight (MW). High-MW HA exhibits antiinflammatory immunosuppressive effects, whereas low-MW proinflammatory. In this study, we investigated whether acute exacerbations (AECOPDs), which affect patient quality life survival, are associated altered turnover BAL. METHODS We used BAL from patients stable (n = 53) or during AECOPD 44) matched for demographics clinical characteristics control subjects 15). HA, synthase-1 (HAS-1), hyaluronidase (HYAL) values were determined enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, HYAL activity was zymography. The MW analyzed agarose electrophoresis. RESULTS Levels HAS-1, significantly increased compared subjects. AECOPD, resulting increase exacerbations. also observed a significant negative correlation levels FEV1 % predicted but not diffusing capacity carbon monoxide predicted, indicating degradation may be more obstruction than emphysema. CONCLUSIONS AECOPDs subsequent contribute to function decline
