Synthesis of high purity titanium silicon carbide from elemental powders using arc melting method

摘要: Abstract The objective of this study is to investigate the formation Ti3SiC2 from Ti/Si/C powders using arc melting method. results show that sample sintered at 80 s produced a near single-phase (99.2 wt.%) with relative density 88.9%. These were confirmed by phase determination XRD analysis and supported micrographs FESEM/EDX analyses. porosity all samples dependent on macropores in bulk micropores TiCx grains. proposed reaction mechanisms for synthesis might be formed TiCx + Si, Ti5Si3Cx + C, Ti5Si3Cx + TiCx early arcing time (≤ 10 s), while TiCx + TiSi2 take place 15 s 80 s. After 80 s, decomposition into TiCx, TiSi2 C was observed.
