Factors associated with dietary supplement use among prescription medication users

摘要: Background: We examined the patterns of nonvitamin dietary supplement (NVDS) use among adult prescription medication users in United States. Methods:Usingthe2002NationalHealthInterviewSurvey, we analyzed factors associated with NVDS and prior 12 months descriptive, 2 , logistic regression analysis. Results: In States, 21% reported using NVDSs months. Of respondents who used both medications months, 69% did not discuss this a conventional medical practitioner. Among adults most commonly supplementsincludedechinacea,ginseng,ginkgo,garlic,andglucosaminechondroitin.Prescriptionmedicationuserswith menopauseandchronicgastrointestinaldisordershadthe highest rates (33% 28%, respectively), andprescriptionmedicationuserswithcoronaryheartdisease history myocardial infarction had lowest (12% each). adjusted analysis, increased by included being female, Hispanic, having more years education, living West, lackingmedicalinsurance,andhavingchronicconditions.Elderly were less likely to NVDSs.
