Scope of horticultural land-use system in enhancing carbon sequestration in ferruginous soils of the semi-arid tropics

摘要: Soil exhaustion is a major concern particularly in ferruginous soils of the tropics and restoration soil quality through management organic carbon (SOC) one options to combat situation. To understand scope different systems sequester (Typic Rhodustalfs), three representative systems, viz. agriculture (40 years), horticulture (20 years) forestry (several centuries) were selected contiguous area under semi-arid tropical climate. The study indicated that quasi-equilibrium value (QEV) SOC decreased from 1.78 0.68% first 30 cm, when are used for instead retaining them as forest. A shift agricultural horticultural system over 20 years increased QEV 0.81% indicating accumulation SOC. highest threshold observed forest system, followed by lowest system. present indicates better option enhance if not feasible these soils.
