摘要: INTRODUCTION Understanding factors that influence tobacco use often involves detailed assessment of smoking behavior (i.e., puff topography) via mouthpiece-based, computerized devices. Research suggests the a mouthpiece to evaluate topography may alter natural behavior. This study was designed compare measurement using mouthpiece-based methods desktop and portable devices) do not direct observation). METHODS A total 30 smokers (> or =15 full-flavor light cigarettes/day) participated in six Latin square-ordered, 2.5-hr experimental sessions were preceded by at least 8 hr objectively verified abstinence (carbon monoxide level .68), each method reliable (across bouts within condition, most r values > .78). In contrast, participants perceived either device aspects their (e.g., increased difficulty, reduced enjoyment, altered cigarette taste; p < .05), relative video recording only. DISCUSSION Although observational be optimal for measuring certain characteristics, logistical challenges posed this likely limit its usefulness. Together, these results suggest devices offer convenient useful tool researchers examining topography.
