摘要: Microbicides are agents applied topically to the vagina prevent HIV transmission. Microbicide products formulated as semi-solid dosage forms or "gels" coat vulnerable tissue deliver active ingredients. Effective microbicide delivery vehicles must have appropriate rheological properties ensure deployment in vivo. become diluted by fluids after application; dilution affects vehicle and mechanics of vaginal distribution, thus affecting efficacy. To simulate changes that might occur application, this study analyzed effects small dilutions (10-30%) with fluid semen simulants on three formulations: a cellulose lubricant (KY Jelly), polyacrylic acid moisturizer (Replens), carrageenan prototype (Carraguard). Rheological behavior was characterized using cone-and-plate rheometry. Data were fitted either power-law, Carreau, Herschel-Bulkley model. parameters from these fits input models coating flow due squeezing, simulated area coated output used compare responses different formulations two diluents for varying degrees dilution.
