International Journal Of Alcohol And Drug Research, 3 (2), 159-168. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.7895/ijadr.v3i2.100 Aim: dimensionality DSM-IV dependence (AUD) criteria was tested applying different methods. Sample: Data from 2006 German Epidemiological Survey Substance Abuse (ESA) were used. A mixed-mode design used (self-administered questionnaires telephone interviews), 7,912 individuals, aged 18 to 64 years, participated. response rate 45%. assessed according DSM-IV, based Munich Composite Diagnostic Interview (M-CIDI). Inter-item correlations, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Latent Class (LCA) applied total (unrestricted sample, URS) a subsample individuals with at least one endorsed criterion (restricted RS). (LCFA) performed using RS, including covariates (age, sex, education). Findings: mean inter-item correlation higher in URS than RS. When without endorsement excluded, factor analyses resulted more dimensions. In LCA yielded an interaction abuse, class membership. LCFA identified two dimensions five classes corresponding Conclusions: Sample has critical analyses. who do not endorse single are bi-axial structure (abuse dependence) can be supported. However, there is also evidence that further diagnostic category should included or threshold for lowered.
