摘要: Matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization is performed in a manner to thermalize large analyte ions plume of desorbed material for spectroscopic analysis. The thermalized have low or zero mean velocity and are presented at well-defined instant time, reducing artifacts sharpening the spectral peaks. In one embodiment light delivered matrix sample holder having cover, baffle compartment. compartment impedes contains undergoes collisions lower its directionality. Thus "thermalized", passed mass analysis instrument. preferred embodiment, an optical fiber butts up against thin transparent plate on which specimen resides, with side vacuum acceleration chamber. A mechanical stage moves both x- y-directions select point receive radiation. use optic illuminator allows entire assembly be subsumed essentially within dimensions conventional stage.
