摘要: The origins and development of butterfly conservation in southern Africa are explored the role Lepidopterists’ Society (LSA) promotion research is described. LSA members have produced several Red Lists for South African butterflies. Southern Butterfly Conservation Assessment project, a joint venture between LSA, Animal Demography Unit (ADU—University Cape Town) National Biodiversity Institute was launched 2007. This has resulted comprehensive accurate distributional database rigorous assessments using IUCN (2010) Listing categories criteria 794 taxa assessed. LSA’s Custodians Rare Endangered Lepidoptera programme aims to conserve all threatened species, prioritising Critically category. Moving beyond species-based conservation, habitat landscape now key strategies which focus on vegetation types biodiversity hotspots. (in partnership with ADU) also recently LepiMAP an online photographic geo-referenced will develop moth atlas whole Africa, as part continent-wide effort. Another important project Caterpillar Rearing Group, documenting life histories Afrotropical region.
