摘要: Abstract For many species of marine megafauna, strandings remain the most important source biological samples. Because their opportunistic nature however, data have long been under- or misused in assessment population conservation status. Even if national and international regulations promote use monitoring strategies, interpretation remains controversial. The aim this study is to provide a context for megafauna stranding data, order assess achievement specific objectives against Good Environmental Status criteria EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive other regional agreements. first step construct an priori spatial distribution under null hypothesis H0. theoretical dead animals can either be set uniformly, consistent with current knowledge on abundance vertebrates, based management objectives. drift prediction these carcasses would time series expected hypothesis. reverse observed highlight mortality areas stranded animals. correction by probability getting according conditions estimated inferred from strandings. differences between situations constitute anomalies cases where departs distribution. This work proposes several indicators that used anywhere world applied all large vertebrates found stranded. integration MSFD various agreements could cost-effective relevant information protected species. In impaired ecological situations, complementary strengthen diagnosis made regarding status hence strategies.
