This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract Background People an intellectual dis- ability value work as a significant part of their lives, and many them want to participate in regular paid employ- ment. Current estimates show that the number people ID who have some form employment are very low, ranging from 9 40 % across different countries, despite legislations. review examines papers pub- lished past 20 years attempt answer following research question: 'What environment-re- lated factors contribute obtaining or maintaining competitive for disability?' Method databases PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Embase Web Science were searched relevant between 1993 2013. All independently screened by two researchers. Methodological quality studies was evaluated, data on environment-related stimulating disabilities extracted grouped into categories. Results A total 1932 articles retrieved. After extensive screening relevance quality, 26 included this review. Four themes/categories environment- related could influence participation distinguished. Five conducted employers' decisions opinions. Eight focused job content performance, eight workplace interaction cul- ture. evaluated support coaches. Con- clusion Despite ongoing legislation promote workforce, area still extremely scarce.
