摘要: In-patients at a London hospital over one year from whom the south-east England strain of 'epidemic' methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was isolated were compared with in-patients strains methicillin-sensitive (MSSA). MRSA virtually entirely hospital-acquired; isolates before 10 days uncommon and related to recent previous admission. Thereafter first occurred fairly constant daily rate about 1.9 per 1,000 in-patients. Acquisition MSSA after more than 4 in similar rate. Such less likely be penicillin-sensitive admission (11 vs. 22%) considered hospital-acquired. The single caused 40 infections year, half all hospital-acquired staphylococcal infections. Patients prescribed anti-staphylococcal antibiotics patients indwelling cannulae both had ninefold increased risk acquiring MRSA. There no reciprocal increase control measures substantially reduced number
