Summary In a study of spotted hyaenas Crocuta crocuta in the Kruger National Park, five techniques diet determination were examined to validate comparison between different studies. Hyaenas frequently scavenged carcasses large ungulates, particularly buffalo. However, more than half mass consumed was from their own kills, primarily medium-sized impala, kudu and warthog, which became vulnerable due drought conditions. Animal remains hyaena scats tended over-represent species small prey species, but could be used indicate that throughout Transvaal Lowveld depended on availability various buffalo impala generally most important. Adult about 3–8 kg d-1, females appeared have better net energy economy males.
