摘要: The presence of feral cats (Felis catus) in the braided river valleys New Zealand poses a threat to native species such as critically endangered black stilt (Himantopus novaezelandiae). Trapping remains most common method control introduced predators, but trap placement criteria have not been fully informed by advances understanding spatial ecology pest species. We assessed suitability Global Positioning System (GPS) tags study behaviour rivers. tagged and tracked five individual adults, one female four males. Tracking periods varied from 3 18 days at fix rate location every 15 min. This was considered an adequate trade-off between battery limitations opportunity approximate continuous displacement path cat for representative number days. Individual home range size estimates (100% Minimum Convex Polygon, MCP) 178 2486 ha. For six incremental analysis revealed that least 460 locations are required calculate using MCP. Habitat selection showed significant differences among individuals tending select 'Mature riverbed' habitats. effort should be focused on this habitat. Movements distances travelled move mainly mid-afternoon (1500 hours) early morning (0300 hours). GPS telemetry provides powerful movements open landscapes Zealand.
